SEPTEMBER 27, 2022 SHORT BUT SWEET SAIL

SEPTEMBER 27, 2022

SHORT BUT SWEET SAIL

Anyone involved with sailboat races always has one big concern: will there be enough wind to have a race?  The wind was looking pretty feeble when I arrived at the harbor around 3:30. We prepped the boat and left the harbor, relieved to see an Easterly breeze developing.  As we approached the start area, we determined the wind was from about 80 degrees and set a line square to that direction.  With the evening getting shorter and being a barbecue night, we did not need a long race so we called for course Echo 5: start to Blacks twice around finishing at the start buoy.  We blew the 10-minute horn for A Fleet to start at 5:55 and B Fleet to start at 6 pm.

While we had over 20 boats out, only 12 uploaded tracks in A fleet and 5 in B Fleet.  You must run and upload the Race QS track to be counted!  Going twice around is perfect because it is easy to shorten course if necessary, but the wind, as light as it was kept the boats moving.  The first of A Fleet to round Blacks the first time was Aboriginal, followed by Sweetheart, Aquavit, Pinata, Sagittarius, Sanctuaire, Jersey Girl, Avatar, Tusitala, Gold Rush, New Wave and Good Timin'.  B Fleet was led around Blacks by Zoop, Perfect 36, Pair A Dice, Sea Quake and Sweet Pea.

At the finish for A Fleet Aboriginal was first 26:07, followed by Sweetheart 28:51, Pinata 29:06, Sagittarius 31:31, Jersey Girl 32:23, Avatar 32:45, Aquavit 32:54 Gold Rush 33:22, Sanctuaire 34:27, New Wave 35:31, Good Timin' 35:43 and Tusitala 36:43.  All times are elapsed and course distance was 1.68NM.

For B Fleet, Zoop was first 29:32 followed by Perfect 36 29:59, Pair A Dice 31:51, Sea Quake 38:06 and Sweet Pea 47:31.  Times are elapsed, and course distance was 1.68 NM.

With the wind lasting long enough for all boats to finish and the sun setting quickly in the West, it was a short but sweet sail.

GUEST COMMENTS:

In Santa Cruz, we are blessed with many very talented and experienced sailors.  I am going to start tapping this resource for information to share with our group.  Our first contribution will be from Paul Tara (Zoop) who shares his interpretation of what was happening last Tuesday.  Paul has over 60 years of experience sailing in Santa Cruz, mostly in dinghies. I have taken the liberty to highlight what I believe are key takeaway points.

Paul Tara earlier years of sailing

"TARA TALK"

My first thought is, “It’s better to be lucky than good.” I have no idea why the breeze veered 90 degrees last night.  But prior to the start, we made a couple of jogs inshore and noted a decrease in easterly pressure on the beach. Also, there was no fog in Capitola, and not much chill.  The easterly can be a flirty breeze and, any time there isn’t more pressure on the beach, I get uneasy.  If the fog is sweeping in by Seacliff, and it’s chilly, then it’s more dependable.

Our reason for going offshore had more to do with strategy than the breeze.  SF -BP is a short weather leg. There’s really only enough distance for one or, at most, two tacks. Unless there’s a lot more pressure on the beach, only the fastest boats have enough race track to punch out and cross on port.  For everyone else it’s “Duck Soup”.   If we can, we like to sail the short port tack first to ensure we don’t get trapped.  Last night’s veer was icing on the cake.  We had only just gotten up to speed on port when the header hit and we were on the starboard tack layline.  I can’t remember the last time I sailed in that condition.  Usually an easterly veer to a southerly results in less pressure, or “transition”, followed by a calm or westerly refill.  But that didn’t happen.  The southerly actually built.  After our finish, there was a boat out by MB rail-down on port heading SSW, while it was glass along the beach.  A flirty breeze.

Sailing a keelboat in those conditions can be very, VERY frustrating.  The swells result in such radical changes in apparent wind that there’s almost no such thing as a groove to be in.  Make the sails round, accept that they’re going to be mistrimmed part of the time, and DO NOT PINCH.  Better to close reach and have flow over the foils than try to squeeze it up and slide sideways.  Wear as few clothes as you can tolerate, particularly head gear.  Human skin is the most sensitive wind instrument.  Zoop has no instruments other than a depth sounder and a compass.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2022 SPECTACULAR LIGHT WIND EVENING

SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

SPECTACULAR LIGHT WIND EVENING

Predictions were not optimistic for the evening with calls for 7 knot winds decreasing through the evening.  As we left the harbor just after 5, we surveyed the ocean which revealed very light wind ripples sporadically spread across the bay.   We saw the wind was roughly from 240 degrees and set our red ball mark about halfway to mile buoy and our "flag mark" as the other end of the start line.  We called for a course of once around the temporary mark and finish at the start buoy.  We had over 20 boats out with 16 boats uploading tracks in Fleet A and 6 boats in Fleet B.  We blew the 10 minute horn at 5:50. This horn is the 5 minute horn for Fleet A and the 10 minute horn for Fleet B.

All boats in Fleet A tacked their way toward the mark we had set, with the boats starting at the right end of the line doing better than the left end of the line even though there was a large crowd of boats at the right end.  As we saw a little more wind right after the start, I called for a twice around course for A fleet.  As the wind was predicted to decrease, I kept B Fleet on a once around course.  The first A fleet boat around the mark was Pinata followed by Aboriginal, Yellow Belly, Sweetheart, Avatar, Frisky, Tusitala, Jersey Girl, Good Timin', Double Espresso, Geronimo, Sagittarius, Aquavit, Big Mac, Pair a Dice and Perfect 36.

Fleet B was led by Toad around the mark followed by Makani, Gold Rush, Sea Quake, Pacific Spirit and Kicks.

The wind kept up enough for the Fleet A boats to finish with Aboriginal being first 34:53 followed by Pinata 37:16, Yellow Belly 41:04, Sweetheart 43:20, Tusitala 43:49, Double Espresso 43:50, Jersey Girl 45:27, Good Timin' 45:38, Avatar 47:55, Frisky 48:30, Sagittarius 48:41, Geronimo 49:40, Aquavit 49:42, Perfect 36 52:36, Big Mac 54:57 and Pair A Dice 57:00.  All times are elapsed and the course distance was 2.35 NM.

Fleet B finished with Toad in the lead 22:15 followed by Gold Rush 23:55, Makani 24:17, Sea Quake 32:11, Kicks 33:07 and Pacific Spirit 33:31.  All times are elapsed and the once around course was 1.18NM.

Though the wind was barely enough to have a race, the display of clouds in the sky provided a spectacular light wind evening.

LESSONS LEARNED:

I love Tuesday nights and the opportunity to learn.  On this evening, seeing how the boats at the right end of the line did better showed me the importance of being windward of the fleet.  Another lesson was that finding and using pockets of wind was the critical factor for this evening, without sailing too far off course.

After some introspection I learned a lot this evening about tacking in light wind.  I am always guilty of executing quick tacks.  My preferred strategy is to tack quickly to the point where the clew clears the shrouds and can be pulled in quickly for the new point of sail.  This strategy can work in healthier wind but does not work well in very light wind.  Turning the wheel (or tiller) too quickly slows the boat down and with the increased momentum of the turning boat, it is easy to end up way off the wind.  Another consideration is that in light wind, you do not want the jib sheeted in too quickly when tacking.  The large, rounded jib (not sheeted in tightly) helps the boat speed up. As the boat increases speed coming out of the tack the jib can be sheeted in as the boat sails closer to the wind.   It is important to remember the axiom: FIRST build speed, then POINT.  You cannot effectively point without speed.

NEXT TUESDAY IS THE LAST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH AND WILL BE BARBECUE NIGHT AT THE CLUB. BRING YOUR BEST FOOD TO GRILL AND SHARE.

See you next Tuesday.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2022 HEALTHY NORTHWEST ENDING WITH A SHIFT

SEPTEMBER 13, 2022

HEALTHY NORTHWEST ENDING WITH A SHIFT

I arrived at the harbor early in the afternoon with the ocean showing a healthy breeze across the bay. Predict Wind was calling for 14 to 15 knot winds, but there was no indication that the wind was backing off so I swapped out the 155 for the 135 jib.  As we left the harbor right after 5 pm, I felt good having less sail area for the evening.  We determined the wind direction was from 245 and set a line square to this direction.  With so much wind, I called for course Whiskey 2: start, Schuyler, Mile, Blacks, finish.  We blew a 5:50 horn for a two-fleet start, Fleet A starting at 5:55 and Fleet B starting at 6pm.

Pair A Dice sailed with B fleet, so I was able to sight the start line for the A fleet start.  There was one boat that was OCS by a couple of seconds but returned to the line for a proper start: a true display of the Corinthian attitude!  All boats tacked their way toward Schuyler with Aboriginal leading the A fleet followed by Sweetheart, Tusitala, Sagittarius, Pinata, Aquavit, Perfect 36, Geronimo and Avatar. B fleet followed with Sanctuaire first around Schuyler followed by Zoop, Makani, Simpatico, Pair A Dice and Kicks.

After rounding Schuyler it was an easy reach to Mile with a longer run down to Blacks.  On the way to Blacks, there was a huge shift in the wind with the wind blasting from the north right off the beach.  What started as a run to blacks ended with a close reach to make the Blacks mark.   After rounding Blacks, the finish line could be reached downwind with the wind blowing off the beach.

At the finish, Sweetheart was the first  A fleet boat over the line 37:27, followed by Aboriginal 38:32, Tusitala 43:02, Aquavit 43:16, Pinata 43:30, Sagittarius 45:23, Geronimo 45:11, Perfect 36 45:52 and Avatar 48:48.  Fleet B had Sanctuaire over first 44:07, followed by Zoop 46:30, Makani 48:08, Simpatico 48:42, Pair a Dice  50:43 and Kicks 57:41.  All times are elapsed and the course length was 3.85NM.

It was a beautiful evening on the water starting with a healthy northwesterly but ending with a huge shift in direction.

We had over 20 boats out for the fun, but only 15 tracks were uploaded to Race QS.  Running and uploading this track is the only way to be counted in our series.  The track for this evening can be found at:

IMPROVING YOUR RESULTS:

When I first started racing, we were very analytical about our racing. After each race, we would discuss three questions: What did we do right? What did we do wrong? What could we have done better? This resulted in our improving results.

There is racing and there is social sailing. Social sailing is fun, but without focus on performance, race results suffer.  Some top sailors will celebrate an event with many people on board and just not upload a track because they accept that they are not really racing.

When racing, each crew member can accept responsibility for improving results. The helmsman is most critical for keeping the boat "in the groove" (best speed and a proper course).  The helmsman should also monitor for headers and lifts as progress is made toward the windward mark.  Monitoring headers and lifts can also be monitored and pointed out by crew.  Taking advantage of tacking on headers is a huge factor.  Crew can assume many responsibilities: Are sails trimmed for best performance with jib fairleads in optimum position?  Are tacks fast and efficient? Pointing out patches of kelp to avoid (hitchhikers can be costly).  Keeping the skipper apprised of pertinent boat traffic.  Keeping weight position correct.

We had poor results on this evening which I attribute to my ignoring and not tacking on headers as they occurred.  I love sailing and always realizing ways to improve.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2022 WHISPERING SOUTHERN BREEZE

SEPTEMBER 6, 2022

WHISPERING SOUTHERN BREEZE

When I got to the harbor at about 3, the flags showed a very light wind with little change as the afternoon progressed.  As we left the harbor at 5, there were signs of patches of faint wind on the water.  The direction of the wind was from 200 degrees, almost due South.  This presented an unusual challenge: the shortest South wind course we have is to finish at Mile.  If the wind died, there would be no way to shorten course.  I decided to set a temporary mark about halfway in the direction of Mile.  It was comical since the water in that location showed 54 feet and my rode for the "flag buoy" is only about 50 feet.  Sure enough, when deployed the buoy was submerged requiring a long boat hook to retrieve.  We set the usual orange (start line ball) at that location.   We went back in and set the "flag buoy" for a start line square to the wind.  We called for the course to be once around the orange ball and back to the finish and blew a horn at 5:50 for a two-fleet start.

On PAD we approached the line on port tack with about two minutes to the start and jibed around for a starboard tack start close to the yellow ball end of the line.  While we started on time, this position left us with a lot of dirty wind and many boats that we would need to dip if we tacked over. As we tacked our way to the mark, the wind was increasing and the request was proposed to go twice around the mark, so we announced the lengthening of the course to twice around.  All boats made their way to the mark with Pacific High being first of Fleet A around followed Yellow Belly, Frisky, Avatar, Sanctuaire, Tusitala, Sagittarius, Perfect 36, Pair A Dice, Muffin and Big Mac.  The first of Fleet B around the mark was Makani, followed by Zoop. Toad, Nidaros, Sweet Pea, Pacific Spirit and Kicks.

While the decision to lengthen course to twice around worked for fleet A, the wind was dying and the request for  once around for fleet B was requested and announced.  At the finish for Fleet A, Yellow Belly was first 33:06, followed by Pacific High 34:30, Geronimo 34:48, Sanctuaire 39:37, Avatar 39:39, Frisky 40:03, Tusitala 45:30, Perfect 36 48:25, Pair A Dice 49:57 and Big Mac 51:32.  All times are elapsed, and the course distance was 1.45 NM.

Fleet B finished their one lap course with Makani in the lead 18:42, Zoop 20:07, Toad 22:19, Nidaros 22:46, Sweet Pea 24:16, Pacific Spirit 24:21 and Kicks 31:53.  Times are elapsed, and the course distance was 0.72 nm.

Despite the light wind, it was a beautiful evening on the water with about 25 boats out to enjoy the whispering southern breeze.

RACE QS:

We routinely have several boats that complete the race that "forget to start their Race QS track".  We cannot count boats that do not run their track.  I know there are many tasks required to prepare a boat for the race.  I suggest presetting the start of the track before you even get to harbor.  If you are planning on racing, you could preset the start for 17:45 while having breakfast or your morning coffee.  Just make sure you bring your phone to the boat and, for best results mount the phone face up with the top of the phone pointed toward the bow.

The track for this evening can be viewed at:

SEMINAR ABOUT STARTING RACES:

We had a great seminar about setting up for a good start in a race.   Thanks to Chris Hoffman for this great presentation with about 20 people attending.

See you next Tuesday and please pray for wind!

AUGUST 30, 2022 PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR A RACE

AUGUST 30, 2022

PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR A RACE

When I got to the harbor at 4:30, the flags were showing a stiff northwesterly. To emphasize how strong the wind was, there were two kite-boarders sailing just off of Twin Lakes beach.  I was considering swapping the 155 for the 135, but opted to stay with the 155.  As we left the harbor at about 5:15, we noticed the sea-state indicated winds of about 15 knots.  We determined that the wind was coming from about 245 and set a line square to this direction. Being a barbecue night, I wanted a shorter course, but with this much wind we called for Whiskey 3: Start, Schuyler, Blacks, Finish.  We blew the horn at 5:50 for a two fleet start.

On Pair A Dice, I have tried to set my starts up so I am coming down the line on port tack a minute or two before the start, looking for a gap in the line to tack into.  On this night I was late coming down the line and ended up at the yellow ball right at the start time.  Since the SB tack boats were further down the line, I was able to execute a port tack start which only required me to dip one boat.  All  boats tacked their way to Schuyler and the first A fleet boat around was Aboriginal, followed by Perfect 36, Avatar and Double Espresso (together), Aquavit, Watts Moore, Pair a Dice, and Good Timin'.  B fleet rounded Schuyler with Zoop in the lead followed by Pacific Spirit, Simpatico and Makani together, Toad and Kicks.

The long run down to Blacks from Schuyler had few boats change order in each fleet.  At the finish, the first A fleet boat was Aboriginal 35:38, followed by Perfect 36 43:33, Avatar 43:44, Aquavit 43:44, Double Espresso 44:36, Pair a Dice 46:30, Watts Moore 47:00 and Good Timin' 48:34.  B fleet rounded with Zoop in first place 42:35, followed by Simpatico 46:58, Makani, 47:14, Pacific Spirit 48:04, Toad 49:27 and Kicks 50:12.  All times are elapsed and the course distance was 3.46 NM.

I was a beautiful evening with consistent steady wind, perfect conditions for a race!

SAFE SAILING:

The biggest deterrent to participation in races are accidents causing damage to boat or injury.  It is true that racing boats sail in close proximity and require total focus and following the rules. It is impossible for the person on the helm to have 360 degree visibility with two sails hoisted. I always have my crew apprising me constantly about any boat that could present a problem, especially during the starting sequence.

I love sailing and the social interactions that occur on boats, but trivial discussions have no place during a starting sequence. Every crewmember should be concentrating on traffic.  It is easy to get lulled into complacence when you are a starboard tack boat since you usually have right of way, but it is still critical to be aware since you may need to notify a port tack boat of your presence.

FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH SEMINAR:

We are conducting seminars on the first Tuesday of each month.   Food will be available to purchase, so you can get your food and drinks and go downstairs for the seminar.  We cannot dictate a time for the seminar since we never know when the race will be over.  We will announce when the seminar will start when people are gathered.  The theme of next Tuesday's seminar will be: SETTING UP FOR A GOOD START.
