SEPTEMBER 24, 2024 JUST ANOTHER DRIFTER

SEPTEMBER 24, 2024

JUST ANOTHER DRIFTER

Predictions: Predict wind was calling for 5-8 knots decreasing through the evening.

I got to the harbor around 2 pm and thick fog was enveloping the harbor with the flags hanging limp.  As the afternoon progressed, the fog dissipated, and the flags were showing some wind.  Would it be enough to have a race?

With the new earlier (5:30) start, we were exiting the harbor at 4:30 to experience the real world on the water.  We saw 7-8 knot winds inside with a wind line showing more wind outside.  At the start mark we determined the direction to be the normal  240 degrees and set a start line square to this.  With more wind showing outside, we called for a short course to Mile Buoy and back to start.  Starting a little earlier worked out well as it allowed most boats to get out to the wind.

Fleet A was able to get around Mile with Aboriginal in the lead followed by Heartbeat, Duet, Yellow Belly, Pegasus,  Magic, Rosie and Sagittarius.  As B Fleet slogged its way toward Mile, I called to shorten the course for Fleet B to finish at rounding Mile.  It was a challenging evening with the waves impeding forward progress in a breeze that was dying.

Some of the boats, frustrated by the light wind, headed for the harbor but at the A Fleet finish, after sailing the whole course, Aboriginal was first over the line 44:16 followed by Pegasus 52:27, Yellow Belly 52:58, Duet 56:52 and Rosie 1:26:49.  Times are elapsed, and the course distance was 2.2 NM.  Meanwhile, B Fleet sailing the shorter course was led by Animal House 27:23 followed by Nidaros 37:39, Simpatico 41:17, Big Mac 42:05, TOAD 45:54, Sailing Pair A Dice 46:31, Pacific Spirit 49:35 and Wind Goddess 1:00:15.  Times are elapsed and the course length was 1.1 NM.

Light winds on Tuesday Nights are getting to be the norm.  As frustrating as it is for all of us, tonight was JUST ANOTHER DRIFTER.

At least we had an awesome barbecue at the club. A big thanks to Mike Gross with special cuts of incredible grilled food.  Other participants showed up with awesome food to grill and share.  This “last Tuesday of the month barbecue” is turning into quite an event.

SEPTEMBER 17, 2024 VARIABLE WINDS

SEPTEMBER 17, 2024

VARIABLE WINDS

PREDICTIONS FROM PREDICT-WIND: 15 KNOT NW DECREASING TO 5 KNOTS WITH 20 KNOT GUSTS

As we left the harbor at about 4:45 it looked like steady winds on the bay.  We saw 12-17 knot winds as we approached the start mark and determined the wind was coming from 240. We set a start line square to this wind.  We ambitiously called for course Whiskey 5: start> Schuyler>finish at S/F.   As the clock ticked down the wind was going down also.  Another drifter was in the cards.  We quickly set a temporary mark about ¼ mile in the windward direction and changes the course to: start>temporary mark>Blacks and finish at S/F.  We blew the 10-minute horn and watched as Fleet A, sailing on the last gasp of very light wind crossed the line and sailed toward the temporary mark.  Five minutes later, Fleet B was drifting aimlessly in virtually no wind.  Ten minutes after the start had most boats unable to get over the start line as a few boats retired and headed for the bar.

Most of Fleet A had rounded the temporary windward mark and were on their way to Blacks.  We called to shorten the course for Fleet A to finish by rounding Blacks and Fleet B to finish at the windward temporary mark.  Fleet B was drifting aimlessly, in close proximity with no control.  We got so close to another boat we started our engine to avoid crunching fiberglass.  We decided to motor out to better wind for a sail. Looking back at the group, the Easterly had finally filled in allowing boats that had not retired to finish.

The first A Fleet boat to round the Windward mark was Yellow Belly followed by Watts Moore, Flexi Flyer, Interlude, Good Timin’ and Magic.

At the windward mark finish line Fleet B was led by Animal House 24:35, then Nidaros 31:18, Rosie 33:34, Hot Tuna 33:45, TOAD 33:59, Quixotic 34:50, Makani 35:10, Simpatico 35:25  and Kicks 35:40.  All times are elapsed and the course distance was 0.25 miles.

Fleet A, with the Easterly filling in, was able to finish with Watts Moore in the lead 40:06, and Yellow Belly 40:55, Flexi Flyer 41:16 and Interlude 42:15.  All times are elapsed and the course distance was 0.8NM.

With the Northwest wind being great before the start to no wind and then the Easterly filling in, it was an evening of VARIABLE WINDS.

Tuesday September 10, 2024 UNDEBATABLE WIND!

SEPTEMBER 10, 2024

UNDEBATABLE WIND!

Predictions  for the evening: 13 knot winds  with gusts to 18, decreasing through the evening.

Actual conditions:  consistent winds from 17 to 20+ knots from 235 degrees.

We called for course Whiskey 2: Start>Schuyler>Mile>Blacks>Finish at S/F to starboard.

We blew the 10-minute horn and watched as Fleet A and B got off to a clean start.  Most of the boats took the inside track as is usually preferred for Northwest wind. The boats that had reefs in shook their reefs out as we approached Schuyler and the wind was starting to subside. The first A Fleet boat to round Schuyler was Heartbeat followed by Sweetheart, Sagittarius and Yellow Belly and Interlude together.  Fleet B was led by Perfect 36 then Sumo, Simpatico, Inspiration, Sailing Pair A Dice and TOAD.

All boats made their way around Mile and Blacks as the wind was getting lighter.  The first boat to finish in Fleet A was Heartbeat 38:08 followed by Sweetheart 41:16, Sagittarius 46:56, Aboriginal 47:26,  Interlude 50:29 and Yellow Belly 50:35.  The first B Fleet boat to finish was Zoop  51:13 followed by Sumo 51:33, Perfect 36 53:14, Simpatico 55:27, Sailing Pair A Dice 1:02:46, Inspiration 1:03:23 and TOAD  1:05:03.  All time are elapsed, and the course distance was 3.83NM.

It was awesome to actually have some good wind and clear skies.  Though there were fewer boats,          presumably because of the political debate, we enjoyed UNDEBATABLE WIND!

NORTHWEST WIND, GO INSIDE!

SEPTEMBER 3, 2024 PERSISTENCE THROUGH SEPTEMBER FOG

SEPTEMBER 3, 2024

PERSISTENCE THROUGH SEPTEMBER FOG

Predictions

Predict wind: Fair with 9 knot west wind decreasing after 7pm.

Reality: Light southerly wind with pockets of light wind across the bay.

The wind was from 210 degrees, so we set a temporary mark about 300 yards to windward and with the wind already starting to dissipate at about 5:30 we called for a short course: Windward temporary mark, Blacks and finish at S/F with possible call for shortening course depending on conditions.  We blew the 10-minute horn as the fog was getting thicker. Visibility was so poor, you could not see both ends of the start line.

Fleet A got off the line in search of the temporary mark we had set. It seemed like a game of follow the leader as boats all seemed to find the mark.  The first A Fleet boat to round was Aboriginal followed by Magic, Aquavit, Yellow Belly, Sagittarius, Duet, Rosie, Interlude and Double Espresso.  B Fleet was led by Big Mac followed by Sailing Pair A Dice, New Perspective, Simpatico, Nidaros, TOAD, Perfect 36, Kicks and Wind Goddess.

As the fog intensified, we announced to shorten course to finish at Blacks.  The only way to find the mark was following your chart plotter.  Have you updated the current position of Blacks on your GPS?  Once again, it was a game of following the leader, hoping that the leader knew where the mark was.  As the wind died even more, we finally could see the mark off in the distance ahead as we slowly crept up to it.

The first A Fleet boat to cross the finish line was Aboriginal 30:16 then Aquavit 34:12,Sagittarius 36:40, Yellow Belly 37:21, Magic 41:20, Duet 42:14, Rosie 44:25 and Interlude that was moving faster (under motor ?) 44:38.  B Fleet was led by Big Mac 32:18, then Nidaros 36:48, Perfect 36 38:30, Sailing Pair A Dice 39:42, New Perspective 42:14, Simpatico 42:53, Kicks 45:51, TOAD 49:26 and Wind Goddess 55:27.  All times are elapsed the course distance was 0.76 NM.

It was an interesting evening with fog that was thicker than any I have witnessed on the bay. It was amazing to me that nearly the whole fleet that started, continued on to finish in such light wind and heavy fog. It was a prime example of PERSISTENCE THROUGH SEPTEMBER FOG.

We have a wonderful group of sailors as exemplified by the actions that took place this evening with multiple boats getting towed back into the harbor by other boats. Thanks to all of you for your assistance.
