PERSISTENCE THROUGH SEPTEMBER
FOG
Predictions
Predict wind: Fair with 9 knot
west wind decreasing after 7pm.
Reality: Light southerly wind
with pockets of light wind across the bay.
The wind was from 210 degrees, so we set a temporary mark
about 300 yards to windward and with the wind already starting to dissipate at
about 5:30 we called for a short course: Windward temporary mark, Blacks and
finish at S/F with possible call for shortening course depending on
conditions. We blew the 10-minute horn
as the fog was getting thicker. Visibility was so poor, you could not see both
ends of the start line.
Fleet A got off the line in search of the temporary mark we
had set. It seemed like a game of follow the leader as boats all seemed to find
the mark. The first A Fleet boat to
round was Aboriginal followed by Magic, Aquavit, Yellow Belly, Sagittarius,
Duet, Rosie, Interlude and Double Espresso.
B Fleet was led by Big Mac followed by Sailing Pair A Dice, New
Perspective, Simpatico, Nidaros, TOAD, Perfect 36, Kicks and Wind Goddess.
As the fog intensified, we announced to shorten course to
finish at Blacks. The only way to find
the mark was following your chart plotter.
Have you updated the current position of Blacks on your GPS? Once again, it was a game of following the
leader, hoping that the leader knew where the mark was. As the wind died even more, we finally could
see the mark off in the distance ahead as we slowly crept up to it.
The first A Fleet boat to cross the finish line was Aboriginal 30:16 then Aquavit 34:12,Sagittarius 36:40, Yellow
Belly 37:21, Magic 41:20, Duet 42:14, Rosie 44:25 and Interlude that was moving
faster (under motor ?) 44:38. B Fleet
was led by Big Mac 32:18, then Nidaros 36:48, Perfect 36 38:30, Sailing Pair A
Dice 39:42, New Perspective 42:14, Simpatico 42:53, Kicks 45:51, TOAD 49:26 and
Wind Goddess 55:27. All times are
elapsed the course distance was 0.76 NM.
It was an interesting evening with fog that was thicker than
any I have witnessed on the bay. It was amazing to me that nearly the whole
fleet that started, continued on to finish in such light wind and heavy fog. It
was a prime example of PERSISTENCE THROUGH SEPTEMBER FOG.
We have a wonderful group of sailors as exemplified by the
actions that took place this evening with multiple boats getting towed back into
the harbor by other boats. Thanks to all of you for your assistance.
