JUST ANOTHER DRIFTER
Predictions: Predict wind was calling for 5-8 knots
decreasing through the evening.
I got to the harbor around 2 pm and thick fog was enveloping
the harbor with the flags hanging limp.
As the afternoon progressed, the fog dissipated, and the flags were
showing some wind. Would it be enough to
have a race?
With the new earlier (5:30) start, we were exiting the
harbor at 4:30 to experience the real world on the water. We saw 7-8 knot winds inside with a wind line
showing more wind outside. At the start
mark we determined the direction to be the normal 240 degrees and set a start line square to
this. With more wind showing outside, we
called for a short course to Mile Buoy and back to start. Starting a little earlier worked out well as
it allowed most boats to get out to the wind.
Fleet A was able to get around Mile with Aboriginal in the
lead followed by Heartbeat, Duet, Yellow Belly, Pegasus, Magic, Rosie and Sagittarius. As B Fleet slogged its way toward Mile, I
called to shorten the course for Fleet B to finish at rounding Mile. It was a challenging evening with the waves
impeding forward progress in a breeze that was dying.
Some of the boats, frustrated by the light wind, headed for
the harbor but at the A Fleet finish, after sailing the whole course,
Aboriginal was first over the line 44:16 followed by Pegasus 52:27, Yellow
Belly 52:58, Duet 56:52 and Rosie 1:26:49.
Times are elapsed, and the course distance was 2.2 NM. Meanwhile, B Fleet sailing the shorter course
was led by Animal House 27:23 followed by Nidaros 37:39, Simpatico 41:17, Big
Mac 42:05, TOAD 45:54, Sailing Pair A Dice 46:31, Pacific Spirit 49:35 and Wind
Goddess 1:00:15. Times are elapsed and
the course length was 1.1 NM.
Light winds on Tuesday Nights are getting to be the
norm. As frustrating as it is for all of
us, tonight was JUST ANOTHER DRIFTER.
At least we had an awesome barbecue at the club. A big
thanks to Mike Gross with special cuts of incredible grilled food. Other participants showed up with awesome food
to grill and share. This “last Tuesday
of the month barbecue” is turning into quite an event.
