VARIABLE WINDS
PREDICTIONS FROM PREDICT-WIND: 15 KNOT NW DECREASING TO 5
KNOTS WITH 20 KNOT GUSTS
As we left the harbor at about 4:45 it looked like steady
winds on the bay. We saw 12-17 knot
winds as we approached the start mark and determined the wind was coming from
240. We set a start line square to this wind.
We ambitiously called for course Whiskey 5: start> Schuyler>finish
at S/F. As the clock ticked down the
wind was going down also. Another
drifter was in the cards. We quickly set
a temporary mark about ¼ mile in the windward direction and changes the course
to: start>temporary mark>Blacks and finish at S/F. We blew the 10-minute horn and watched as
Fleet A, sailing on the last gasp of very light wind crossed the line and
sailed toward the temporary mark. Five
minutes later, Fleet B was drifting aimlessly in virtually no wind. Ten minutes after the start had most boats unable
to get over the start line as a few boats retired and headed for the bar.
Most of Fleet A had rounded the temporary windward mark and
were on their way to Blacks. We called
to shorten the course for Fleet A to finish by rounding Blacks and Fleet B to
finish at the windward temporary mark. Fleet
B was drifting aimlessly, in close proximity with no control. We got so close to another boat we started our
engine to avoid crunching fiberglass. We
decided to motor out to better wind for a sail. Looking back at the group, the
Easterly had finally filled in allowing boats that had not retired to finish.
The first A Fleet boat to round the Windward mark was Yellow
Belly followed by Watts Moore, Flexi Flyer, Interlude, Good Timin’ and Magic.
At the windward mark finish line Fleet B was led by Animal
House 24:35, then Nidaros 31:18, Rosie 33:34, Hot Tuna 33:45, TOAD 33:59,
Quixotic 34:50, Makani 35:10, Simpatico 35:25
and Kicks 35:40. All times are
elapsed and the course distance was 0.25 miles.
Fleet A, with the Easterly filling in, was able to finish
with Watts Moore in the lead 40:06, and Yellow Belly 40:55, Flexi Flyer 41:16
and Interlude 42:15. All times are
elapsed and the course distance was 0.8NM.
With the Northwest wind being great before the start to no
wind and then the Easterly filling in, it was an evening of VARIABLE WINDS.
